Oconee Delegation Introduces Homestead Legislation

House, Senate bills filed in response to County Council needs

COLUMBIA – Members of the Oconee County Legislative Delegation simultaneously introduced legislation in the South Carolina House and Senate today that would allow Oconee Count to increase the “Homestead Exemption” by $50,000 to $100,000.

“The legislation is in response to a request by the Oconee County Council that was communicated to us last November,” the Delegation wrote in a statement.  “We agree with County Council that this increase would provide tax relief to the elderly and disabled – most of whom are on fixed incomes.”

The bills provide that Oconee County Government will have to fund the exemption from its own sources rather than being reimbursed by the state.  Doubling the Homestead Exemption for the entire state would require funding of about $100 million in the 2007-2008 budget year.
